How to Read Tire Sizes and More

There is a string of letters and numbers on your tire that mean a lot of different things. For instance, the letter at the beginning stands for the rating of the tire. If it has a P, then it is rated as a passenger vehicle. However, if there is no letter, then it is likely a European tire. If it has LT, then it is a light truck tire that has different requirements for air pressure than other vehicles. The next three numbers relate to the tire's size in millimeters.

The numbers after the first backslash stand for the aspet ratio, which means that the height is equal to the percentage of the tire's width. The R stands for the type of construction that the tire has. For example, an R means that it has a "radial" construction. There are also letters for wheel diameter, load capacity, and DOT symbol.
